5 tips for CMOs to Uplevel their Board Presentations

In a recent, thought-provoking CMOSession hosted by CMOlist, we delved into the art and science of presenting to the board - a topic that, despite my experience as a board member and frequent presenter, left me with numerous fresh insights I wish I'd had when I first started.

In this session Cammie Dunaway, Julie Herendeen, Dariusz Paczuski and I collectively explored the most effective strategies for preparing, presenting, and participating in board meetings across both public and private companies. 


Following are a few of my takeaways - many more if you watch the full session!

  1. Know your audience
  2. Align with the CEO and CFO
  3. Provide context
  4. Think cross-functionally
  5. Speak business, not marketing
  6. Bonus Tip - Fractional CMOs have a seat at the table. If you are in a fractional role the only difference should be in time spent on business not the level of involvement. Present, attend board meetings, and engage with board members to provide the fullest value.


While our discussion was geared towards CMOs, the principles uncovered are universal & should resonate with anyone in a C-level or leadership position.
